Diet Starts Tomorrow!

Literally this time.  I'm getting serious about my weight loss again and it all starts tomorrow.  Having tried a few weeks ago, lost 6lb in the first two weeks then regained 4 of those in the third and then gone off track majorly I'm making some commitments to myself and I'm blogging them here:

Until 1st August at the earliest I will

do some form of exercise everyday
Drink a litre and a half of water a day
take my meds and supplements daily (Meds I've had down for well over a year, supplements not quite)

And I won't have
chocolate
coke
pizza (with the planned exception of a trip out with friends which if it comes off will involve lunch at Pizza Hut)
anything from the chip shop
sausage and bacon baguettes from my grabbed from my favourite sandwich shop on my way home (or from anywhere else)

In order to help myself stay on track, I'm going to keep a journal of everything I eat and drink and what exercise I do.  And in order to stay extra accountable I'm going to blog it.  But so as not to annoy everyone who reads here I've set up a new blog:  Emma Eating

A Fresh Start

On 22nd February 2010 I started trying to lose weight.  1st May 2010 I gave up coca-cola and all products containing chocolate.  That's when my weight loss really kick started.  September time I hit a bit of a plateau and was losing a few pounds, gaining them back.  And towards the end of November (almost 7 months later) I started eating chocolate and drinking coke again.  There have been a few days since then when I haven't eaten chocolate but not any where I've not drunk coke.

Until today.  I've gone coke and chocolate free again as of today.

My weight is up, I'm 17 stone 12.  Which given that today is the day after a weekend away of eating out each night and is the same as my weight on Thursday (my usual weigh day but I wanted to weigh today as well as it's a starting point) is pretty good.  Given that I was pretty consistently around the 17 stone 4 mark before this, not so much but I'm not beating myself up over it.  I don't see the point.

My starting weight on Feb 22nd 2010 was 18 stone 13 1/2 so I've still lost and maintained a one stone weight loss over the last year.  I don't have a set goal weight and never did.  I don't want to be thin, I want to be healthier.

It's definitely time to start moving back in the right direction though and I'm glad I'm doing it again at last.

Reverb 10 - Wisdom

I know I'm late to this but I only found out about it yesterday.  I've just signed up to Reverb 10.  I may very well go back and touch on some of the previous prompts as a couple of them are very interesting to me. But I'll have to see how things go time wise.

Today's prompt is Wisdom.  What was the wisest decision you made this year and how did that pan out for you?

My first thought was that I needed to put my (not really blogged about) decision to try and take better care of myself down as the wisest decision I made this year.  But then I stopped for a minute and thought about it more. That's not the best or wisest decision I made this year.

In May I gave up Coke and Chocolate.  I was totally addicted to the both of them, drinking roughly a litre of "normal" coke each day and eating at least 100g of chocolate.  Originally that was supposed to be for three weeks, to prove that I could.  Three weeks was a random period of time that I picked in 2008 when I set that as a goal on my current 101 in 1001 list.  I was determined that was one of the goals I was definitely going to achieve.

And after the three weeks I didn't go back to the coke or to the chocolate.  In fact I didn't have any again until about ten days ago, over six and a half months later.

Another of my goals was six months of no missed medication.  I've not missed any for 10 months now.  I'm taking better care of myself in other ways, realising my limits more and trying to be more OK with who I am and what I'm doing.  I'm achieving goals and forgiving myself and being realistic when I can't or don't manage others.

I've lost a lot of weight, I feel better in many ways and my depression is more stable then it's been in a long time.  I really struggle at this time of year usually and I'm struggling now - just not as much as before.  I'm not as stressed or worried about Christmas as I might previously have been.  Most importantly I feel like I'm clearer on what my goals are and how I'm going to reach them.

Taking better care of myself, loving myself I suppose you could say, is definitely one of the best decisions I made this year.  But when I look at it, it all traces back to that small first step of giving up the coke and the chocolate - I didn't expect it to have such an impact on my mentally as well as physically.  And I'm not sure I could have made the decisions that I need to take better care of myself if I'd not made that decision first.

Almost... but not quite

I almost managed to keep my for one week only promise and replace that 2 stone gone badge with the 30lb badge... but not quite.  I needed to lose one pound for that to happen.  And I lost three quarters of a pound.  Which I'm still really really happy about.  Next week I hope to switch over the badges in my sidebar but we'll all (including me) have to wait and see.  My mum said that I did especially well because I ate a lot of sausages when we had hot dogs and jacket potatoes on Bonfire Night (and leftovers the next day).  Personally I didn't think I ate that many and anyway as I keep trying to tell her I think the odd meal here and there doesn't matter.  I need to still have what I like and treats because this has to be for life.  I just need to do it in moderation.

The obvious exception to that is the coke and chocolate which I've now not had for six months and 9 days (today is the 9th, right?).  I realise that's different to what I've been preaching here but I had real physical addictions to them and I'd tried making them occasional but couldn't do it.  If I didn't drink coke for a day or didn't have enough coke I'd get major headaches - as soon as I got a headache I'd think "I need to drink some coke to clear that up" (and still now six months later when I get headachy a little voice in the back of my head goes "not enough caffeine?" even though I know damn well that I'm not longer physically hooked on coke and I don't drink tea or coffee so it definitely can't be!). And if I didn't eat chocolate I'd get ratty and stressy.

I've known for a long time that I had an addiction to those foods and I have no problem saying that.  But suddenly last night it occurred to me that it makes me a food addict.  And I don't know why but that's a whole different ball game to me.  Particularly reading Cheryl's post this morning.  I need to work on that.  First however I need to think about it some more and become ok with it.

Don't get me wrong, I've come a long way and I know I have.  I've beaten those addictions and I don't binge eat any more (or at least not like I used to and I don't remember the last time I did a full blown binge).  I'm really proud of how far I've come and what I've achieved.  I'm just realising how much further I've got to go.

Thoughts On Progress So Far

I'm up 1/8th of a pound today.  Which really is just the same as staying the same because it's absolutely nothing. I actually thought I might have gained a little so I'm really pleased.

I realised yesterday that although I feel a bit like I'm struggling and stuck with my weight loss right now that's not a huge deal.  Obviously I would like to lose more this year and I do need to lose more.  But even if I stay at this weight for the rest of the year I'll still be happy with my progress.  And I'll still have come a long way from where I was.  I do still need to work on this and I will.  I'm just going to try to stop beating myself up about it.  If I start whining and moaning about that in future, please remind me of this post and then tell me to shut up ;-)

The other thing worth noting is that I have completely lost track of how many weeks it's been since I gave up coke and chocolate.  I used to be able to tell you exactly how many weeks it had been and now I've a rough idea because when I realised I didn't know I tried to work it out.  But I haven't looked it up and I don't feel like I need to.  Another step on the way to beating that addiction me thinks.

My new lucky number

I'm down three quarters of a pound this week.  Which is definitely better than nothing.  Considering I went out to eat at Prezzo last Wednesday and then went to Frankie and Benny's on Thursday it's actually pretty good.

I really can't think of much else to say this week.  I did buy some new clothes this morning.  I do have to take one of the pairs of trousers back as they are a lot too small but I'd wondered that when I bought them partially because they were only £5 and also a different style to my normal.  A second pair (pinky cords) did up but was too tight.  I'm keeping those though as I think I'm not far off of being OK with those.

I wear clothes with elasticated waists a lot of the time.  They tend to fit a lot better because of my size and shape and also because of my CP I find them easier (because I don't have to faff with buttons etc when balancing to pull them up and down - I can do it but it's not always easy).  I've especially done that since I found lovely black trousers from Evans last year which are really smart but have elastic in the back.  At the beginning of the year I was wearing a size 26 in those trousers with the elastic in the back.

The cords I bought this morning?  Have absolutely no elastic in them.  And are a size 22!!

22 must be something of a lucky number for me today as my total weight loss is now 22 and a quarter pounds. *big grin*

And, as I wrote on Sunday, I've now passed 100 days without any coke or chocolate!!!!! *even bigger grin*

100 Days!

Today is the 100th Day of my being off of Coke and all things chocolate.   The last day I had either was 30th April.

For this girl who was drinking about a litre of the stuff everyday and eating over 100g of chocolate each day, that's amazing.  Particularly given the fact that the original goal was 3 weeks!!

I did consider that my next goal should be weight related rather than time (specifically I was thinking of "until I've reached 3 stone lost") but now I'm thinking a time based goal might be better.  3 stone would mean I'd doubled my total weight loss and there's no guarantee how long that will take.  I think it might turn into a goal that's easy to ignore.  So I've decided that the goal is six months (August is month 4)

I do feel a lot better for it and in ways that surprise me too (as well as those which I expected).  But that's probably a post for another day.

Instead of Coke I drink diet lemonade, water, squash and some other things but those are the main ones.  To be honest I should probably drink a lot more water and less of the diet lemonade and squash.  Anything is better than all the coke though.  I don't snack as much as I used to now which is great.  Although there are definite times when I could do with cutting it down.  Mostly I have mini bits of shortbread or flapjack when I do snack.  There are now whole days when I don't snack which is definitely new.

I'm really proud of myself that I'm beating this addiction (I don't think it's a good idea to say I've beaten it) and how well I'm doing with my weight loss.  Here's to lots more to come (I hope)!

Slipping a bit.

This week I am up two pounds.  Which is a little disappointing although I'm not really surprised either.  This past week probably hasn't been the best it could have been in terms of healthier eating etc but it wasn't horrific either and I'm still not drinking Coke or eating Chocolate so that's definitely something.  To be honest I was probably due for a bit of a blip around this time because I've been doing what I've been doing for 11+ weeks now and I probably need to shake things up now.  In a way I'm surprised I haven't plateaued a bit before now.

Plans for this week are to really push the water as I've been drinking a lot of squash, ribena and diet lemonade lately. Try to use Just Dance everyday (I love that game so much and am really pleased that Just Dance 2 is coming out this year!) as I didn't really manage that this week.  And cut down on my snacking.  I don't snack anywhere near as much or as often as I used to but it is creeping back up a bit if I'm honest.

And speaking of honesty I must admit that I am fed up and stressed out at the moment.  After tomorrow I have a pretty good break coming up for the next two and a half weeks (which I'll blog more about tomorrow or Thursday) and I have to say it's very welcome.  As I walked back from the bureau yesterday all I could think was how good it was going to be to chill for a while and take it easy.

Hindsight is always 20 - 20

Image description: Badge which says Healthy You Challenge 20 pounds gone! It has a star in the background with the text over it and underneath is a red stripe with scalejunkie.com written on it in white. Colours used: red, brown, light blue.

Down 3lb from last Tuesday which means I have now lost a total of 20lbs since 22nd February this year!!  I'm so pleased!!  If I'd known how good this would feel I probably would have gotten started sooner.  But I'm not beating myself up because I know that a lot of this is happening and happening so easily because I'm doing it at the right time and I'm determined.  Hindsight, and all that.

It's late and I want to go to bed (I'm aiming for before midnight every day this week) so just two points quickly

I am still off of all coke and chocolate.
I went swimming yesterday and used Just Dance for a workout this evening.  I hope to continue daily exercise this week.

Four months update

I was just sat here wondering what to title this entry when I realised that today is exactly 4 months since I started losing weight this time.  The fact that I've stuck at this for four months and made real progress is amazing.  I think the last time I managed something like this was 2002/2003.

I'm up 1 and about a quarter pounds this week.  As I wrote last week however, I'd eaten very little for a few days before that weigh in as I'd been ill (nothing on one day as the 1 thing I ate didn't stay down).  This week I've been eating normally And I have my period.  I'm not trying to justify myself and I don't feel bad about it.  I'm well aware that a few times this week I probably didn't make as good choices as I could have done.  But no one can expect to lose every week without fail - and I certainly don't.

My period is another something I'm pleased about because once my weight got up really high I started having loads of problems with it.  Whilst I don't have a proper PCOS diagnosis my GP is sure I do have polycystic ovaries.  Whether I have the syndrome to go with it is unknown but I do have a lot of other things going on like depression which would tie in with it. She was thinking that losing weight would help with that.   I'd not had a period since the end of March and before that it had been crazy too, skipping months and coming twice in January etc.  I'm not saying that I think losing this much weight has been the cure for the whole thing but it does make me see that I'm definitely getting healthier.  And hopefully in a few more months I'll have lost more weight and can get back to a more regular cycle which would probably make me feel better in a lot of ways.

I've now passed 50 days without Coke or Chocolate.  I was telling someone about that yesterday and she was horrified to hear how much coke I was drinking each day before, wondering what that must have been doing to my insides.  Which is totally a fair comment.  I do feel a lot better for it.

And the other week I had to adjust my lifejacket because the straps were much too loose!

50 days!

Today is day 50 since I've had any coke or chocolate.  It was one of my 101 in 1001 goals to go without for three weeks.  I think currently I'm aiming for two months without but part of me is wondering if 100 days would be an achievable goal.  That would be a long term one though, I think short term two months and then ten weeks will be the goals. Short term goals on the way to long term ones are most achievable I think, and most satisfying.

For perspective I was drinking something like a litre of full fat coke everyday and eating a big bar (100g+) of something, usually galaxy.  I was managing to lose weight by cutting it down and trying to have a day or two every week where I didn't have it.  And trying to increase that.  But it really wasn't working.

Because the truth of the matter is I was addicted to them both.  Especially the coke.  I would get bad headaches if I didn't have very much.  Really bad.  I suspect that has to do with the caffeine.  Given that I drink neither tea or coffee that means I've now been caffeine free for 7 weeks.  And surprisingly enough I didn't really have any headaches when I first came off of it.  Which I've pretty much always had when I tried before and had put me off doing it a bit.  I suppose that's part of doing it at the right time.  There's definitely something to be said.for that.

And when I say no chocolate I don't just mean bars of chocolate.  No hot chocolate, no chocolate biscuits, no chocolate cake, no chocolate chip muffins.  If it has anything to do with chocolate it's had nothing to do with me.

If I worked this out right and I'm pretty sure I did, of the 17lb I have lost, 11lb of those have gone since I gave up coke and chocolate.  Looks like I need to update my good things list!
